This summer while we were camping my youngest son caught the fishing bug. At first he could catch anything we tried worms and bread and lures but the fish either didn’t bite or got the bait and got away. Then the line got snarled and the reel broke. He was not a happy camper and really down on himself, despite me saying the fun of fishing was just fishing not needing to catch anything. Tell that to an eight year old who saw other boys his age and older catching fish in the from the same pond.

first catch
Then one morning I went to the store about ten miles from the campground bought a new fishing pole ( Pirates of the Caribbean) brought it back to him and we went fishing on our second to last day. Still no catch. Then using my boy scout training and knowledge (so he says) I noticed the hooks were pretty large for the size fish that were in the pond. So another trip to the store for smaller hooks, a few tips and some encouragement and voila he caught one. Not a very big one mind you but he caught and he couldn’t have been happier. It was one of those MasterCard priceless moments.

this big
Now three weeks later he is a pro and talking about going ocean fishing, though he still wouldn’t pick up his biggest catch yet with his own hands to throw it back. The old boy scout had to do that.

my youngest son 7 years old went with me to the hip hop concert in GR featuring George Moss. Miss Reality, GRits, group 1 crew and T-Bone. He had a blast and danced up a storm to bad it was to dark to get pictures of him.

Sometimes I think I don’t post enough on this subject but this is worth sharing. My oldest son (following in his mom’s footsteps) got straight A’s on his final report card. He is going into 7th grade and doing 8th grade math this summer and next year. don’t know where he gets it from because I really stink a math.
This past weekend he and his team placed 3rd in a local Gus Macker 3 on 3 basketball tournament against some pretty big guys including out of town ringers.. They should have won but got robbed in a heart breaker game in the final second but that is another story.
I’m proud of you kid!

spent yesterday and today on a survival overnight with my son Jordan. we went up to camp tall turf with his fifth grade class. we had to build a lean to shelters and cook dinner and breakfast over an open fire. we ended up on a unintended five mile hike Monday night after a game of wolf pack. then it rained (first time in weeks) and the few holes that were left in the roof of our shelter were right over my sleeping bag.
all in all it wasn’t bad. really enjoyed spending time with the big kid and passing on some of my outdoor skills from my boy scout days

The Lakers won again last night. Not that I’m a huge Minnesota fan but I can’t stand the Laker swagger. Hopefully the Kings can put an end to it this year.
Meanwhile I’ve got this undercover Laker fan in my house who is too young to stay up and watch the games but cheers when I report the scores. I warned him that he’s going to have to go get a job if he wants to stay in this house and be a Laker fan.
