yoga and Christianity don’t mix?

So for about three to four years (intentionally for about the last two years) now I have been practicing yoga. I got into it because I was looking for something to help with my chronic back pain (caused by my scoliosis). After some frustrating days I discovered that practicing yoga helped relieve my lower back pain. In fact I am now pretty much pain free in my lower back. However there were two unanticipated benefits.

  1. I lost weight (30 pounds in fact)
  2. Yoga helped me to center my mind in a way that allowed me to better connect with God.

Now most everyone who is a regular part of my church Mosaic Life knows I practice yoga. But recently with the launch of our new ministry Awaken: contemplative living 24/7 I decided to pursue training to teach yoga as my contribution to that ministry. So I got level one teacher training from yoga fit and I’m pursuing registered teaching training with Brooke Boone of Holy Yoga. Next month I will start teaching a free weekly yoga practice. I know there are some Christians who think that the two are incompatible (check out the video below.) But there is something powerful that happens when I bring my Christian spirituality to my yoga mat. Any other Christians yogis care to comment

terminal flight

Published by Andre Daley under my life

I funny thing happened on the way to Chicago for the Faith In Public Life Training Institute. At 5:25 a.m. I boarded a plane with the intention to fly to Cleavland and then Chicago. But a 5 a.m. my unconscious brain had other plans and the airline staff cooperated so half an hour later I was on my way to Houston. Yes this is the stuff of nightmares. I boarded the wrong plane and because they were in a hurry and I was only semi conscious no one realized this fact until I noticed that the great lakes were nowhere to be seen outside the window as they should be if I were truly heading to the home of the rock and roll hall of fame.

The flight attendant tried to put a good spin on it suggesting that I was meant to spend this early our flying with her on her flight. I did not care for that prophetic word. So after I spent 2 /12 hours in flight I arrived at the George Bush airport in Houston with the promise that an airline rep would meet me and get me to re-booked on a flight to Chicago. Well wouldn’t you know it there was no one there to meet me and there was fog in Houston so all kinds of flights were delayed and you can’t get to Chicago Midway from Houston on this airline, but maybe I was told I could get on a flight leaving that evening at 6 p.m. because all the flights to O’Hare were full.

I was beginning to feel like a character in in the movie the Terminal. Well 5 hours later, a confirmed seat one a flight returning to GR two attempts at standby I finally got on a plane to Chicago.

What I thought was gong to be a simple trip turned in an adventure I won’t soon forget

toward a missional future

emergent, new monastic, emerging, organic, ancient future, missional church. I haven’t been completely comfortable with any of these current labels for evolving ways of being the church. As I have been re-imagining what it means to be a follower of Jesus in my current cultural context  (urban, racially and socio-economically diverse) I’ve moved beyond emergent but had not named what that beyond was.

I was recently been asked to teach a class at a local seminary on the missional church. As I’ve been preparing for that I find myself growing increasingly more comfortable with identifying what I’m doing as missional. To be sure the missional label is not perfect and I can’t say I agree with every expression of missional but here are some things that appeal to my post emergent sensibility.

My developing view of the missional church is

  • Cross cultural in its efforts
  • intentional indigenous - culturally engaged but not culturally absorbed
  • connecting with God who is already at work in our world
  • incarnational proclamation of the gospel
  • realigning or re-imagining all aspects of church life around God’s purposes
  • culturally engaged but scripturally orthodox
  • transforming community
  • church planting reproduction
  • creative and culturally relevant but connected to the historically church

Some language derived from  Friends of missional

So as I move toward the missional future I’ve taken the huge leap of posting a friend of missional button in my side bar. A  first of any kind of identifying button for emerging mosaic.

bragging on the kid

Published by Andre Daley under my life, the kids

Sometimes I think I don’t post enough on this subject but this is worth sharing. My oldest son (following in his mom’s footsteps) got straight  A’s on his final report card. He is going into 7th grade and doing 8th grade math this summer and next year. don’t know where he gets it from because I really stink a math.

This past weekend he and his team placed 3rd in a local Gus Macker 3 on 3 basketball tournament against some pretty big guys including out of town ringers.. They should have won but got robbed in a heart breaker game in the final second but that is another story.

I’m proud of you kid!

bragging on the significant other

Published by Andre Daley under my life

My lovely wife just aced her last course in her PhD studies. yep a big 4.0 or A on intersections of race gender and ethnicities. The prof even wants to write an article with her. She is so much more of a student than I ever was or will be.

Now on to defending the two year paper  and comps in the fall. The soon she will be the good Dr.

I’m so proud!Laughing
